The radio topic led Tuyet to draw connections between music, downloads versus CDs, and, finally, piracy.įrom this idea map, Tuyet saw she could consider narrowing the focus of her mass media topic to the more specific topic of music piracy. From there, Tuyet drew more circles and wrote more specific ideas: high definition and digital recording from cable and Blu-ray from DVDs. The subtopic television branches into even more specific topics: cable and DVDs. Then, the general topic branches into two subtopics written in two smaller circles: television and radio. When you sit to start the rough draft, it can be often overwhelming and sometimes. By the time we sit and start writing, we have so many other things on our minds that the actual draft becomes more of just a step instead of the fundamental building block it truly is. It’s supposed to be a rough draft, after all. It isn’t often that we give a whole lot of thought to our rough drafts. Most importantly, tell us how the character feels in each scene. The world of your story should be just as alive as your characters. Include unique descriptions and objects to make the reader fully present. Promise yourself you wont turn in the very first ideas you put on paper. Before you get to this stage, be sure youve done a lot of preparation: clarified your topic, taken lots of notes, collected as many ideas in writing as you can.: PLAN to do a rough draft and revise it. And sometimes this first rough draft revision becomes two, three, or more revisions, going through the draft from beginning to end multiple times until the plot and characters are all exactly the way I want it. Writing a rough draft is a late stage in the writing process. That one sentence often turns into a paragraph, or an entire page. Consider details like the temperature, the color of the sky or the walls, the time of day, etc. The first pass through the rough draft takes a while because there is so much writing to do still. Don’t make your goal a certain word count or page count. Notice Tuyet’s largest circle contains her general topic, mass media. Make your writing goal to write one sentence every day.
